| These days, the concept of a 'gap year' is changing. Financial problems, as well as the wish not to take too much time out of 'real life' can mean that for some, a gap year isn't even a year at all. Similarly, in order to make the most of the trip many people are combining a range of experiences and projects, from the worthwhile such as saving the giant panda in China, to thrill-seeking experiences, like ranch training in the Australian Outback. |
| While many think of gap years as being exactly that - a year long trip - a shorter trip also has the advantage of slotting into everyday life more easily. Whilst your boss probably wouldn't be delighted with you disappearing for a year at a time, many companies nowadays are happy to negotiate sabbaticals for employees with itchy feet. |
| This brings us neatly onto our next point. Of course, the average gap year (or month, or fortnight) traveller is keen to make the most of their time away, combining the traditional exploration and relaxation parts of the trip with some more worthwhile pursuits. A lot of people will head off to work abroad for a time, often in a field related to their chosen careers in order to gain some vital experience for their CVs. Working during a gap year also has the added advantage of solving tricky financial problems, and may help you to approach your career in an entirely different way thanks to the extra experiences that you pick up. |
| And if you really want to make a difference to the local area or community you'll be visiting, consider volunteer work as a great way to get to know the area in which you're staying, as well as helping to give something back. There are hundreds of volunteering programmes related to every destination and field, from surf coaching in South Africa to working in an orphanage in Moldova, all you have to do is choose! |
| And of course, if you are really keen, you could also try a mix of everything. There are plenty of gap year programmes out there dedicated to offering eager travellers a taste of everything the world has to offer. |
| Wherever you end up on your gap year, month or fortnight, it's important to remember that not everybody gets such exciting opportunities, and you'll certainly have a fair bit to talk about when you return. Bon voyage! |
